Cultivating self-trust

ree

I know what it is like to feel lost and at a loss. I know what it is like to be burnt out, jaded, depleted. I remember being full of questions, longing for answers, desperately going in search of direction, for a sign, for something or someone to show up that could give me those answers, show me the way. I was searching everywhere outside of myself, everywhere but inside of myself.

I was so numb to, disconnected from and afraid of my own feelings. I was fearful of overwhelm, of letting the flood gates open and having to face all which I’d become accustomed to suppressing. For years I coped by bottling up, staying busy. Staying so occupied that I wouldn’t stop to feel, pause to enquire, give space or time to understand what I was feeling.

No. Instead, I wanted quick answers, immediate fixes.

I took the long way to get there. I numbed, I ignored, I attempted to outrun. I avoided until I couldn’t any longer. Because it is in the feeling that lay my answers. It was in the being with that allowed the softness to come, the surrender (not collapse) to unfold, the clarity to trickle in like a riverbed so the answers could become known.

What I know to be true is that the answers we are so often seeking can be found within. Within each of us is an abundance of wisdom, of resources. You may know this, feel this, you may not yet believe it but there is a part of you that pulls towards this with curiosity.

Because we are more powerful than we have been made to realise.

Through life’s circumstances, through traumatic experiences, through words from others that shame and seed doubt - we have done what we’ve had to to survive. We have suppressed, we have masked, we have disconnected from - shape-shifted to fit in so that we could get by, so that we wouldn’t be outcast.

But we can’t live out of our own alignment forever. Our bodies - the home and keeper of this wisdom and these resources - can only suppress for so long. We know that left unchecked it can manifest in dis-ease.

Our bodies hold our wisdom.

Too often we women are conditioned by society to doubt and suppress our intuitive wisdom. Many of us have been taught to view our bodies as something to fight against rather than to nurture. They want to put as many blocks as possible in our way so that we give up on accessing our intuitive wisdom.

But I won’t stand for this any long.

It is within cultivating this relationship with our body that we can and will reclaim it as a source of wisdom and resource for our inner guidance.

It is through cultivating a compassionate dialogue with the Self ~ body, heart and mind~ where I have learnt how to trust myself again. Trust in my body, trust what I am feeling and sensing and trust that I am capable. Through body-based and expressive art modalities I created an abundance of tools to learn how to listen to and understand my body signals and move from a place of resistance to one of partnership.

When we learn to read the language of our body we no longer feel lost because we become our most trusted guide.
